DEV CHRONICLE: UNRELEASED SPELLS

To further expand the possibilities available to Spellcasters, a wide range of new spells had been envisioned. Some even progressed beyond the prototype stage and entered internal playtesting by the Quanticians of Ashkenon. One of the gameplay designers behind Spellcasters Chronicles reveals the story behind three of these unreleased abilities: Weapon Swarm, Tornado, and Astral Cannon.

WEAPON SWARM

“The Spellcaster conjures a swarm of spectral swords around them, each blade launching in sequence toward the caster’s target. The final strike deals even greater bonus damage,” explains Ewan Dubois, Game Designer on Spellcasters Chronicles. Designed primarily for direct duels between opposing Spellcasters, Weapon Swarm was intended to reward players capable of making full use of its enchantment window. “The idea behind this enchantment spell was to introduce a new PvP ability that heavily rewards Spellcasters who manage to fire every sword before the buff expires.” The spell would also have proven effective against larger creatures.

According to Ewan, the spell also answered a long-standing community fantasy: “Fighting with telekinetic blades is a classic fantasy trope, so we had no doubt this addition would have been popular, especially among competitive players. We wanted to make player-versus-player duels more dynamic while allowing Spellcasters that usually stay in the background, such as the Shaman or the Sorcerer, to become true war machines.”

TORNADO

The second spell that never left the Quanticians' workshop was Tornado, an ability designed to make elemental interactions both richer and more accessible. “Elements are incredibly powerful tools in Spellcasters Chronicles, but mastering them could sometimes be demanding if you wanted to fully benefit from their interactions.” As the first Wind spell, Tornado was designed to reward players who understood both the arenas and the game's elemental reactions, while also providing an effective answer to groups of flying enemies. “Tornado had everything it needed to become a fan-favorite spell: stunning visual effects, a strong ‘wow’ factor, intuitive gameplay, deep strategic potential, and its unique elemental infusion mechanic…” For the team, it represented an opportunity to open up entirely new possibilities across the battlefields of Ashkenon.

ASTRAL CANNON

The third unreleased spell, Astral Cannon, was conceived as a devastating ability that demanded precision and mastery. “It was designed as a simple yet elegant spell, allowing Spellcasters to unleash an immense amount of Astral energy, albeit one that was difficult to control.” Its precision would have made it especially effective against the game's largest creatures. The Quanticians also saw it as a way to expand the Astral school of magic. “It would have introduced a new Rank 3 high-damage spell, opening up new build possibilities for Astral Monks and giving them greater flexibility before reaching the Rank 4 ultimate, Astral Nova.”
